Planning FAQ / useful answers first
Before the lights go on
Start with what the space must do, then check what the building and the weather will allow.
What should I measure first?
Measure the usable floor, doorway, door swing and fixed obstacles. Mark drainage and required access before laying out furniture. Test the space with a person sitting down, because knees and movement extend beyond a chair’s listed dimensions. See the seating footprint guide.
How much light does a small balcony need?
Enough to see the route and your chosen activity comfortably, without glare. Start with one shielded outdoor-suitable lamp and add light only for an unmet task. There is no single lumen figure that works for every layout, surface and user. Our lighting guide explains the seated-eye test.
Can I use an indoor lamp under a balcony roof?
No. A roof does not eliminate moisture, condensation or driven rain. Use equipment explicitly suitable for its location and follow every component’s instructions. The lamp, cable, connector, charger and power supply can have different limitations. Ask a qualified electrician about fixed installations.
Are solar lights enough for the doorway?
Not reliably in every setting. Shade, season and battery condition affect output. Do not depend on decorative solar lights for a critical route. A suitable, dependable lighting arrangement should let you identify the threshold even after several dull days.
Is folding furniture always the best choice?
No. It helps only when you can operate and store it easily. Compare the open footprint, folded size, stability and comfort. A fixed compact chair may be simpler if folding furniture would remain open most of the time.
Can I attach a table or screen to the railing?
Only after confirming building permission and suitability of the exact product and attachment. A guardrail is not a universal furniture support. Do not drill, clamp or hang heavy items on assumptions. Read the screening guide before selecting a fixing.
Will a fabric screen give privacy at night?
Not necessarily. Backlighting can reveal silhouettes. Test the material with your actual evening lighting before relying on it. Repositioning a lamp or seat may help more than adding another layer of fabric.
Can outdoor cushions stay outside all year?
Only if the maker’s instructions and your conditions support that use. Many cushions still need drying, protection and indoor storage. A water-repellent outer fabric does not guarantee that seams and filling remain dry. Plan a manageable weather and storage routine.
How do I avoid disturbing neighbours?
Aim light downward, keep brightness modest, avoid flashing modes and switch lights off when finished. Control watering runoff and loose objects too. Check the effect from surrounding viewpoints where you can do so safely and respect building quiet-hour rules.
What if I do not know the balcony load limit?
Ask the responsible building manager or a qualified professional before adding heavy items. Do not estimate structural capacity from appearance or online examples. Large pots, saturated soil, storage boxes and people all contribute to loading.
